The Guru Mantra

The Guru Mantra

Characters: Guruji, Chela and me
Location: Tungnath Top (Shiv temple) at approx. 12000 feet height in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand
Background: On our trek to Tungnath, the weather was freezing cold, when we met a guruji and his disciple in bare essentials.
Please note: This is just a light take on the situation I witnessed on that trek and by no means is intended to disrespect any person or sect.

Trekking to the Shiv temple at Tungnath top
12000 feet high, we finally came to a stop
I no longer felt like the Hero
Chilly winds and chattering teeth;
Temperatures were sub zero!
Covered in layers and layers and then some more;
I looked and felt like an onion for sure!
Boots and padded gloves and monkey mask
Keeping warm here was such a task!
Lo and behold! What do I see?
A Guruji and chela in the vicinity!
Covered in thin saffron and jersey
They walked with such abandon and glee!
No boots no padded gloves no monkey mask
Such divine glow; one could only ask!
My excitement knew no bound
Before the Guru knew, I was on the ground
Prostrated I asked out loud,
“O dearest Guru, how come you walk with just a shroud?
You are the real deal; simply the best
Give me the Guru Mantra; I will do the rest!”
Guruji lovingly smiled and put his lips to my ear
I was all dazed; the truth was near!
“Child, I only wear Amul or Rupa thermal vest
They are the real deal; simply the best!
Buy them if you want something khaas
Sardi me ye de garmi ka ehsaas!!”
